Drive

This series of paintings is a reflection on the role car culture plays in Chicano culture. The United States is the epicenter of car culture globally and a car-reliant nation.

Often, cars and vehicles are symbols of masculinity as they reflect a person's social status via wealth. Men see themselves as more valuable the newer the car, or the more fixed-up the car they own.

In the early days of the automobile becoming widely accessible, they represented freedom for American youth. However, women were still limited from purchasing and driving cars in some regions. In more dire circumstances, cars were the only means of escaping abusive living situations.

The car to me is reminiscent of my childhood riding in all the different vehicles of each family member who was tasked with watching me. The carriages often matching some aspect of their personality.

This series explores the roles in witch cars symbolize freedom, but also dependency, and expression.
